Musically, the pieces are appealing to play and are a fascinating reflection of social and political issues our nation was facing at the turn of the 20th century. Contains detailed historical notes on this nearly forgotten aspect of American classical music, along with supplementary fingerings and practice suggestions added throughout by editor Stephanie Bruning, professor at Morgan State University, who is both a celebrated piano performer and expert in piano pedagogy.Piano

15706e6a4e527-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c9682A481102Favorita, La: Ballet MusicLA FAVORITA (THE FAVORITE) is an opera in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). The libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz is based on the play LE COMTE DE COMMINGES by François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d’Arnaud. On the brink of taking his monastic vows, the young novice Fernand declares that he has fallen in love with a lady whose identity remains unrevealed to him. He discovers her to be Léonor, the mistress of Alfonso XI, the King of Castile. Receiving an army commission from her, he earns a prize from the king himself for his success on the battlefield. When he announces his wish to marry Léonor, further revelations lead to her arrest. He decides to return to monastic life, but her exhausted appearance persuades him to declare his love for her again before she dies in his arms. The opera premiered at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris on December 2, 1840. To meet the demands of the French grand opera tradition, a ballet was presented in the third act, blending the French courtly style with an Italian melodic charm. PINAFORE; or, THE LASS THAT LOVED A SAILOR is a comic two-act opera and the fourth opera collaboration between composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) and librettist W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911). Lampooning British social class, the Royal Navy, and unqualified people who rise to positions of authority, the work became an international sensation following the London premiere at the Opera Comique on May 25, 1878, becoming the second-longest running musical theater work up until that time. The song FAIR MOON, TO THEE I SING is sung by lyric baritone Captain Corcoran at the opening of Act II, where he reviews his concerns regarding his "kindly crew rebels," that his "daughter to a tar is partial," that his friends have abandoned him, and that he is under threat of a court-martial. 15717E6CF70E6-CAC3-492D-9A56-DD0AA4AA13FFM272091Carnival of the Animals, The (Le Carnaval des Animaux), No. 13: The Swan (Le Cygne)Following a disastrous concert tour of Germany in 1885-86, Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) withdrew to a small Austrian village, where he composed THE CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS (LE CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX) in February 1886. From the beginning, the composer regarded the work as a piece of fun. He wrote to his publishers Durand in Paris that he was composing a work for the coming Shrove Tuesday, and confessing that he knew he should be working on his Third Symphony, but that this work was "such fun" ("... mais c'est si amusant!"). He had apparently intended to write the work for his students at the École Niedermeyer, but it was first performed at a private concert given by the cellist Charles Lebouc on Shrove Tuesday, 9 March 1886. No. 13, THE SWAN (LE CYGNE) is the most popular movement from the suite, and is particularly well-known as a vehicle for cello soloists. A beautiful melody that will flow in the legato style, this solo is one that relies on tone quality. Versions for Alto Saxophone and Bassoon, both transcribed by J. Michael Leonard, are from the publisher.Bassoon and Piano
