The baião is a musical rhythm of northeastern Brazil that serves as an accompaniment for dance. It became popular in the 1940s through the musicians Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira. The traditional baião uses accordion, small surdo (bass drum), triangle, guitar and recorder. The lyrics of the baião relate the daily life challenges of the northeasterners of Brazil.Concert Band

The “king” section is quite chromatic and adventurous harmonically and rhythmically, morphing in and out of 7/8, with a pizzicato section in the middle and a very dynamic finale. It also has a bass line your orchestra will most certainly recognize!String Orchestra
11985AF6FE466-4DB1-49DD-8183-B259E3C6DFAFST711Sonata in g Minor (Cat's Fugue)Originally composed by Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757) in the early 1730s (published 1739), Sonata in G Minor, “Cat’s Fugue” is one of his most famous keyboard works, known for its jagged, dramatic opening theme (legend has it that Scarlatti was inspired by his cat walking across the keyboard) and its intense, lively fugal writing. The “Cat’s Fugue” is a single-movement sonata, originally for harpsichord, which has charmed and intrigued audiences for centuries with its energetic contrapuntal design. The version has been arranged by Richard E. Thurston for woodwind quintet, bringing new colors and textures to the work by distributing Scarlatti’s original lines among these varied timbres.Woodwind Quintet

11990AF7CDCA6-775B-4E84-8641-F3CFD5FA9D26S001101Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43Written by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) in 1934, this set of variations for piano solo and orchestra on Niccolò Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin is much like a concerto, though it consists of a single movement with an introduction of the theme and twenty-four variations. The most well-known of the variations is the lyrical 18th, and it has been used in numerous movies over the years. In addition to Paganini's theme as the thematic foundation, the Dies irae theme found in the requiem mass and which features so prominently in Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique is also featured at times. The work premiered with immediate success on November 7th, 1934 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski, with Rachmaninoff himself as soloist. 2+Picc.2+EH.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(3): Hp: Solo Pno: Str.
