MacInnis attended Princeton University, completing his music degree as an undergraduate in 1948 and a masters in 1950. His studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served with the 13th Armored Division of the United States Army, seeing combat in Germany. While at Princeton, he was musically active, directing the band and managing the Princeton Glee Club. He studied composition and theory with Milton Babbitt, Edward Cone, Joseph Kerman, Bohuslav Martinu, Roger Sessions and Randall Thompson, and conducting with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood. MacInnis was elected as an instructor in the faculty of music of the University of Virginia in 1950. He was granted a leave of absence in 1968 to serve as composer in residence with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. As an instructor, he conducted the University of Virginia Band; later, he was tapped as acting department head in 1955. As a composer, MacInnis employed early electronic music techniques, including computer-synthesized music and tape loops. Sonogram I for Flute, Bass Clarinet, Vibraphone, Viola and Cello was composed in 1966. Duration ca. 5' | Flute, Bass Clarinet, Vibraphone, Viola, Cello | |

| 11928 | AE7E32E9-DE2D-4B46-841C-06551E834802 | A400402 | Symphony In C | Written right after he turned 17 and studying at the Paris Conservatoire, this early work by Georges Bizet (1838-1875) is thought to have been a student assignment written for his teacher, Charles Gounod, whose earlier and recent SYMPHONY IN D Bizet’s student outing resembles in many respects. Bizet never intended to see the work published or performed, as he does not mention it in any of his letters, though some musical material does find its way into later works. The manuscript was given to composer Reynaldo Hahn by Bizet’s widow, who then passed it, along with other papers, to the conservatory library, where it was discovered by Jean Chantovoine in 1933. The world premiere of this work written in 1855 took place in Basel, Switzerland, on February 26, 1935, under the baton of Felix Weingartner. Following the premiere, the symphony was immediately hailed as a youthful masterpiece, similar in stature to Felix Mendelssohn’s overture to A MIDSUMMER NIGHT”S DREAM, also written at a young age, and likewise quickly became part of the standard Romantic repertoire. This edition includes additional clarinet, horn and trumpets parts transposed to more commonly used keys. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 included in set). Ravel said of the work, "Do not attach any importance to the title. I chose it only for its euphonious qualities. Do not dramatize it. It is not a funeral lament for a dead child, but rather an evocation of the pavane [a stately, 16th-century Spanish court dance] which could have been danced by such a little princess as painted by Velázquez." The original version for piano saw its first public performance on April 5, 1902 by Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes, and Ravel's orchestration premiered in Manchester, England on February 27, 1911 under the baton of Sir Henry Wood. This Kalmus edition of the 1910 orchestration has been edited by Carl Simpson. Study score. | 2.1.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) | |
