Quintet for Trumpet and Strings (1999) was written on commission from the 2000 Williamson Glen Chamber Music Festival with funding from Loretta and Taylor Burke.  It is dedicated in friendship to Al, Lisa, Albert, and Nicholas Benner.

The starting point for this work was the Trinitarian York plainchant,  Ave Colenda Trinitas (All hail adored trinity).  The composer had previously explored the possibilities of this wonderful plainchant in and organ work (Trinity Matins; Conners Publications, CP#249) but, after completing it, felt that he still had musical discourse to expound with this plainchant.

The quintet is essentially a contemplative work (not without outbursts, however) and the pulse is generally slow.  The plainchant always serves as the driving force behind the piece.  The work is in eleven continuous sections and the sectional structure of the entire work is derived from the note groupings of the plainchant.  The plainchant appears throughout both in direct forms as well as in forms transformed by the workings of magic squares and other devices.  Various sections of the work also explore derivations of new "plainchant-like" material from the original chant. --Carson Cooman
