84667C9D0A54-C08D-4FDA-94A9-E11E62E2496AA135302Tragic Overture, Op. 81 (Tragische Ouverture)Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed the TRAGIC OVERTURE (TRAGISCHE OUVERTÜRE), OP. 81, in the summer of 1880, the same year that he wrote the Academic Festival Overture. Comparing the two overtures, he explained that "one is laughing, the other is crying." Although it does not follow a specific program, it expresses the turbulence and austerity often associated with tragic feeling. The concert overture premiered on December 26, 1880 in Vienna under the direction of Hans Richter. The musical material of the work is entirely derived from Persian traditional music. The tuning, rhythm, form, as well as polyphonic constructions (such as imitation, inversion, retrogradation) relate to the Persian modal system, the Dástgâh, particularly the mode of Návâ (pronounced nahVaa), one of the oldest modes of the Persian system. 84797CD9C67C-BD00-46BE-B229-C2ACD9521CBES504CBLe Roi D'ysThis overture to Lalo's opera "Le Roy d'ys," originally written for orchestra, has proved to be one of the finest overtures in the concert repertoire. It is an intensely dramatic work, and for this reason, lends itself admirably to a band transcription. It depicts many moods, including love, such as in the original cello solo- assigned to the solo alto saxophone in the present transcription. Because of its constant subtlety, this work music be well understood by conductor and performers, with every detail such as tempi, dynamics, various expressions, meticulously observed.Concert Band
