Although the work finds an intriguing connection to the composer’s own novel, titled ORLOS, it eschews a non-musical concept or story. Crafted into four large sections, it could be described as a large toccata for orchestra. The premiere took place on May 25, 2023. | Symphonic Band and Recorded Audio | |

Written at a time when the double bass was rarely featured as a solo instrument, the concerto is both technically demanding and lyrically expressive, showcasing the virtuosic possibilities of the instrument while retaining the elegance and wit of the Classical style. Today, Dittersdorf’s bass concertos, particularly this work, are cornerstones of the double bass repertoire, frequently performed in recitals, competitions, and conservatories worldwide, celebrated for their blend of virtuosity, charm, and historical importance in expanding the instrument’s solo literature.
