The performance, skillfully executed by the esteemed Shemshâl master Ghaleh Mareh, is presented through both audio and video projections. The flute soloist, accompanying this audio/video rendition of the Shemshâl performance, mimics the instrument's sound using an extended technique that involves simultaneous singing and playing. This technique alters the flute's overtone spectrum, allowing the harmonics to resonate alongside the fundamental note, thus producing a sound closely resembling that of the traditional Kurdish Shemshâl. Throughout the piece, the flute player recites poems by Hafez (1325-1390), while singing and playing the piece. Each poem is associated with the Persian Dastgaah (loosely translated “mode”) of Nava. Singing of the poetry is a traditional pedagogy tool to teach the melodic contours of the mode using the words so the students of Dastgaah music can remember the weekly lessons. In addition to the use of extended techniques, Vali uses microtones throughout the range of the instrument to get even closer to accurately recreate different scales (area) of Nava.Singing Flute Player and Video Projection/Electronics

84537C5FC51B-08B3-4EB9-850D-EB36EFF40953B555Sixteen EtudesThis edition was first published in 1924, and were representative of the fashionable, modern style of composition sweeping the musical scene in France in the years following Wolrd War I, which included concepts such as whole tone, pentatonic, and modal scales, irregular, shifting rhytms and time signatures, and elegant nuances such as swelling and diminishing phrases, graceful embellishments, and ever changing tonal colorings. When studied as a prelude to or in conjunction with the popular "Solo de Concours" repertoire, these etudes provide a solid foundation for an enhanced understanding of the early 20th century French style. Additionally, students wil fund the Jeanjan "18 Etudes de perfectionment" more approachable if they have first spent some time with these sixteen. This edition by David and Jean Hite was prepared to produce a clean, easy reading, attractive presentation of these inspired etudes, and it draws together varous performance notes and analyses from the original edition, with supplemental suggestions from the editor.Clarinet
