| 8341 | 7a578faa-9e3c-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | X945001 | Lot's Wives for SATB Chorus and Cello Solo | Written for the Chapel Choir of University College, Oxford, Giles Underwood, Director of Music. This setting of Pireeni Sundaralingam's poem LOT'S WIVES (about the Sri Lankan Civil War that took place between 1983-2009) was written in June of 2023, during the war between Russia and Ukraine and four months before the escalation between Israel and Palestine. Bruce Adolphe describes the work: "As a composer, I was drawn to the way the poem looks back in time as the women look back on destruction, creating a temporal counterpoint of past and present. To set these words, I combined the sorrowful lyricism of looking back to the past with the fierce dissonance of present violence. The cello plays several roles: it triggers memory; it comments on the text and on the music that is sung; it provides accompaniment." | SATB Chorus and Solo Cello | |

It may have been the second work he composed for full orchestra, the first being his CONCERTO FOR TWO PIANOS IN E MAJOR, written the previous year. In 1825, the composer gave the first performance in Berlin alongside his teacher Ignaz Moscheles. The work fell into obscurity for many years until the manuscript was rediscovered in the Berlin State Library archive in 1950. | 8359 | 7AB08420-DC1D-408C-B95A-4A574B5C7238 | S644CB | Drayton Hall Esprit | DRAYTON HALL ESPRIT was commissioned by the Drayton Hall Middle School Band, Charleston, South Carolina, Debbie Oxner, conductor. Drayton Hall was one of the few plantation homes that was not burned by Union troops during the Civil War. It was saved by quick thinking on the part of its residents who hung white bed sheets out the windows, which was the accepted sign that typhus was present inside. The work is based on a motive built on the first five notes that most players learn, the first five notes of the Bb major scale, but they are not set in a simplistic manner. | Concert Band | |
