| 8290 | 7976843A-6DEE-490E-B6F6-D409D3EA82F5 | A926990 | Symphony No. 1 in F minor, Op. 10 | Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 in F Minor was a tremendous success from its premiere and is still considered today as one of his finest works. It displays an interesting and characteristic combination of liveliness and wit on the one hand, and drama and tragedy on the other. In some ways it is reminiscent of the works of Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev. The transparent and chamber-like orchestration of the First Symphony is in quite a contrast to the complex and sophisticated Mahlerian orchestrations found in many of his later symphonies, and the assurance with which the composer imagines, then realizes large scale structure, is as impressive as his vigor and freshness of gesture. This newly engraved edition includes alternate transpositions for B flat clarinets and trumpets to make this masterpiece accessible to student and community orchestras, as well as professional groups. | 3(2-3dPicc).2.2.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Pno: Str | |

| 8293 | 79785F69-DCBD-48ED-9652-6068CD696F53 | A169402 | Thais: No. 23, Act II: Meditation | Jules Massenet (1842-1912) based his opera THAÏS on the novel of the same name by Anatole France. The titular role was created for American soprano Sibyl Sanderson, who first performed it for the premiere at the Opéra Garnier in Paris on March 16, 1894. A revised version of the opera was first performed in the same theatre in 1898. It takes place in 4th century Egypt. The Cenobite monk Athanaël, trying to purge Alexandria of wickedness, influences the courtesan Thaïs to change her carnal ways. After she takes holy orders, the monk has a premonition of her death and tries too late to declare his love for her. The celebrated Meditation in Act II is a popular showcase of the violinist’s penchant for sustained lyricism. | 8300 | 79B0D261-5C10-4684-9E82-3B9E2FBE547E | ST391 | Concerto for Flute and Orchestra | This work is representative of a "middle style" of the composer, displaying less complexity than her later works, but offering an opportunity for the unique purity and fluidity of the solo flute sound to flourish in a generally sympathetic and enhancing surrounding. The soloist in this piano reduction is called upon to display a fairly traditional virtuosic technique: rapid legato passage work; rhythmic, detached, and precise patterns of movement; and lyrical lines. This flute concerto with orchestra was composed in the summer of 1963 for Mark Thomas and premiered by him in February, 1964, with the Omaha Symphony conducted by Joseph Levine. | Flute, Piano |
