8186783A858B-F5E1-462B-B533-0A5D72E9C732A009790El Amor Brujo: Ritual Fire DanceThe ballet El Amor Brujo (The Bewitched Love) was composed by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) in 1915, with revisions taking place throughout until 1920, resulting in several versions. In the ballet, which uses a libretto by María de la O Lejárraga García, a young Andalusian gypsy girl is haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. To be rid of the ghost, all of the gypsies form a circle around their campfire at midnight, while the girl performs the Ritual Fire Dance. When the ghost appears, she dances with him until he is drawn into the fire, vanishing forever. With its fast, repetitive trills and high energy, the section titled Ritual Fire Dance is the most popular music from the ballet. Today, concert versions of this mesmerizing work serve as an encore piece with the likes of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee or Khachaturian's Sabre Dance. Titled SALVUM FAC POPULUM TUUM, which is alternately known as LORD, SAVE THY PEOPLE in English, was written for an Armistice service at Notre Dame Cathedral. While the work begins as a dark, foreboding march, the brilliant fanfare at the conclusion is breathtaking. Lalo Schifrin notes that this exhilarating piece “uses a musical language that oscillates between baroque, 20th century music and American jazz.” Highlighting that the massive brass instrument can be beautiful and melodic too, the work also makes good use of an elaborate percussion section, celesta, harp, and harpsichord. The work premiered on March 3rd, 2018 by Gene Pokorny with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra under Ransom Wilson.2+Picc(dAFl).2+EH.2+BCl.2+CBsn: 4.3.2+BTbn.0: Timp.Perc(3): Hp.Clst/Hpchrd: Str: Solo Tuba

With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) worked on it from 1893 to 1895. It first appeared at the Teatro Regio in Turin on February 1, 1896, conducted by 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Weighed negatively against Turin’s recent Italian premiere of the Wagner opera GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, it received a lukewarm response from audience and critics. A few months later, concertgoers filled opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic to hear it. In Act II, Musetta sings the flirtatious Quando me’n vo’, alternately known as Musetta’s Waltz, bragging of her beauty which evokes yearning and desire in those who stop to look. Unlike the impressionism for which he later became known, this waltz is written in a late romantic style. Not particularly difficult, it is ideal for teaching or for a recital.
