With the original French title "Six Concerts à plusieurs instruments" (Six Concertos for several instruments), some feature multiple solo instruments in different combinations. These works are considered among the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque period. Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, BWV 1050, includes solo flute and solo violin, along with a string orchestra and harpsichord/cembalo. The work is unique in that the harpsichord emerges as a soloist instrument rather than only one for accompaniment. 827279169281-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682R01684Road Maps (Mountains, Rivers, and Clouds and Stars) for Improvising Soloist and Chamber OrchestraThis work was written originally in just two movements (Mountains and Rivers) for the great improvisational soloist Larry Karush, a friend of the composer. A "concerto" where the solo part is completely improvised, Karush premiered the two-movement version on June 6, 2008 with the Third Angle New Music Ensemble at Reed College. Following Karush's death from cancer in 2013, David Schiff added a third movement, Clouds and Stars, dedicated to Karush's memory, which premiered in February of 2014. While the accompaniment parts for the Mountains movement and the Clouds and Starts movement is more traditionally written-out, the accompaniment parts for the Rivers movement play instead from a performance score, and the instruments have flexibility in what lines they play. The quadrille was a lively, stylized dance for four couples, arranged in a square. The dance developed from military parades in which four horsemen performed square-shaped formations or figures. The performances became quite popular, prompting people to perform quadrilles without horses. While Strauss was known as 'The Waltz King,' he wrote music for dances in all of the currently popular forms, including the quadrille. This version of the quadrille dance incorporates famous themes by master composers in each of its six short sections: 1. Le Pantalon: Mendelssohn and Mozart, 2. L’été: Weber and Chopin, 3. La Poule: Paganini, Meyerbeer, and Ernst, 4. Trénis: Weber and Schulhoff, 5. La Pastourelle: Schubert and Mozart, and 6. Finale: Beethoven.
