| 8302 | 79BFB6CD-677B-414F-96C3-3C47533CF06D | 10300121 | Beginner's Guide to the Cello v. 1 | The objective of the Beginner's Guide to the Cello is to provide interesting material with which the conscientious teacher can "build" a cellistic posture of the hands and body and lay the groundwork for future development. Specific requirements of a technical nature, such as playing in the various parts of the bow and holding the fingers in place, have been omitted for several reasons. First, to present a clear and uncluttered page, which is a primary obligation in writing for the untrained eye; and second, the use of such signs and abbreviations in elementary instruction is considered to be less effective than verbal directions from the teacher. The teacher is free, therefore, to exercise his or her own judgment and impose his or her own requirements in these matters. Careful attention has been given to the selection of material which provides a proper balance between necessary drill and a melodious musical experience. The acquisition of technical facility has been reserved for appropriate supplementary etudes. The entire series of four books is a preliminary step to the author’s Fundamentals of Violoncello Technique. Books One and Two of the Beginner’s Guide to the Cello are designed to introduce the first position with both the upward and downward extension of the left hand and to acquaint the student with a basic technique of bowing. | Violoncello | |

The idea was suggested to the composer by the publisher, N. Simrock, following the publisher’s introduction to Dvo?ák’s Moravian Duets by Johannes Brahms. Understanding the national characteristics and talent of the hitherto unkown Czech composer, Simrock suggested he create a series of “Slavonic Dances” in a style similar to that which had recently proved so successful in the base of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances. Using only the rhythms as the most characteristic and expressive element of Slavonic music rather than original folk dance songs, Dvo?ák quickly completed the second series of eight (Opus 72) for piano duet, often also orchestrating them while still composing. Considered one of the most personal, nationally most characteristic, and most famous of Dvo?ák’s works, this critical edition of Op. 72, Nos. 1-4 by Otakar Šourek was based on original sources. | 8311 | 79E9A3ED-F4D7-405C-954E-3B199A05210E | SU798 | By the Forest Brook (Am Waldesbach), Op. 33 | PAUL WETZGER (1870-1937) was a German flutist and composer born in Dahme, near Lübeck. At a young age, he took violin lessons from the local music director, later switching to flute. By 15 years of age, Wetzger had played his first concert in the main church of Dahmen and was second flutist of the municipal orchestra. He later became solo flutist with the municipal orchestra of Essen and taught at the Essen conservatory. He wrote numerous pieces for flute and several chamber music works, also editing works by the French composer/ flutist, Jules Demersseman. Wetzger’s “Am Waldesbach” (By the Forest Brook), Idyll for flute and orchestra or piano, was a staple of celebrated flutist Marcel Moyse, recorded by him in 1935 on the French Columbia label. Since then, it has become a favorite in the flute teaching repertory, perhaps most notably included Toshio Takahashi’s famous Suzuki Flute Method. This Southern Music edition faithfully captures this classic piece as performed by living legend of the flute, Sir James Galway. | Flute and Piano | |
