| 8105 | 76E8DAF3-4C7E-4DF1-A874-4D3E86970B06 | A217102 | Marche Slave, Op. 31 | Marche Slave, Op. 31, ("Slavonic March") was first performed in Moscow in November 1876. It is a rousing patriotic work based on Serbian and Russian folk themes. Tchaikovsky was commissioned to write the piece specifically for a concert to benefit Serb soldiers wounded while fighting (with help from Russian volunteers) against the Ottoman Empire. Hence, the title declared it a march for all Slavs rather than simply for Russians. Though relatively brief, the piece includes a number of distinct moods; bright, festive passages contrast with ominous ones. At several moments, different sections of the orchestra carry their own melodies at the same time, creating a layered effect. | 8109 | 76EEA3C2-243E-432B-8685-267532F41C83 | B388602 | Expansions | The title of this work was suggested by the spreading tone-clusters of the beginning. It also refers to the fact that rhythms, intervals, dynamics, and instrumentation are all subjected to various procedures of expansion and contraction. The entire piece is developed from the material presented in the first ten measures. From a non-technical point of view, the title seems also appropriate since the piece was conceived, not as an exercise in technique, but as a musical statement capable of involving the listener's emotions and imagination purely as a work of art. | Concert Band | |

Some of the variations feature specific sections of the string choir, while others use contrapuntal (canonic) techniques. Each variation supplies the string player with a solid musical experience at an easy level of performance. It is ideal music for the young string player, while musically challenging for the more advanced performer. | String Orchestra | |
