| Program Notes | Khojasteh (Calligraphy No. 10) was written for and dedicated to Cyrus Forough. The composition was completed in July 2010. The musical material of the work is entirely derived from Persian traditional music. The tuning, rhythm, form, as well as polyphonic constructions (such as imitation, inversion, retrogradation) relate to the Persian modal system, the Dástgâh. The composition is based on the Persian mode of Návâ (pronounced nahVaa). Návâ is one of the oldest modes of the Persian modal system. The scale of Návâ that I have used for the piece is: D-Ep-F-G-A-Bb-C-D. The “Ep” means that the pitch is a quarter-tone higher than E-flat. The mode consists of two interlocked tetrachords with the pitch G as the Finalis (the tonic). The descending order is: G-F-Ep-D, and the ascending series is: G-A-Bb-C-D. This mode is elaborated throughout the composition, going through several modal modulations. |
