The work was later champoined by bass trombonist Douglas Yeo who ultimately performed it with the Boston Pops Orchestra conducted by John Williams. In three connected movements, the concerto explores in a clever and unpretentious way the full range of the performer's capabilities, and includes an optional part for medeival cupped bells inspired by Craig Kridel's performance. Although specifically composed for serpent, this cheerful and melodious music is also well-suited and has been transcribed for bassoon, baritone sax, bass clarinet, trombone/euphonium, and tuba. | Serpent, Piano

The composer conducted the first performance in Cologne on October 18, 1904 with the Gurzenich Concert Orchestra. The work opens with a funeral march, introduced by a grim and dauntless trumpet solo which calls to mind the opening motif of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The 4th movement, the well-known, elegiac Adagietto, is often performed apart from the rest of the piece. It appeared, memorably, at the funeral of Robert Kennedy in 1968 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Revised several times, the symphony is here presented in its 1910 version. Flutist Harvey Sollberger says: “Davidovsky’s music shows him as the creator of delicately jeweled, precise structures that function with no waste motion or superfluity–exemplified in Junctures in its economy (consider both its brevity and what is achieved within the ‘limitation’ of working with three treble instruments) as well as in its fineness of styling.” Recording originally released on Nonesuch HB-73028 (“20th Century Flute Music”) by Sollberger, Allen Blustine (cl) and Jeanne Benjamin (vn) | Flute, Clarinet, Violin

The work originated from the slow movement, Andante con moto quasi allegretto, of Dvo?ák's String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, a work he composed in 1873, then subsequently abandoned. Only the graceful cantabile melody is shared by both the Romance and the string quartet, with the rest of the music from the quartet having no place in the newer, lyrical work. He is one of the 19th century's most important composers and performers for the organ, counted together with other greats such as Gigout, Guilmant, and Widor. A still youthful Saint-Saëns wrote the, at times, both warmly light-hearted and formally serious FANTAISIE No. 1 in E-flat Major for organ in 1857. | Organ

Each movement is based on 18th-century dance forms and styles, but written from an 19th-century perspective, serving as a harbinger of the neoclassicism movement to follow. Originally written for piano, Grieg arranged the work for string orchestra only a year after originally composed. While not as well-known as his incidental music from PEER GYNT, many consider this work to be of equal quality. Study score. | String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set)
