They were published separately, the second one appearing last in 1895. Working as a pianist in Paris cafés in the 1880s, he devised the term "furniture music" to describe musical pieces that could enhance the atmosphere of a public space without requiring the full attention of the listener. The title derives from the French word gymnopaedia, an ancient festival which showcased the Spartan fighting spirit with choral singing and dances. This Claude Debussy orchestration of GYMNOPÉDIES 1 and 3 was edited by Carl Simpson. Instrumentation: 2.1.0.0: 4.0.0.0: Perc (1): 2Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). A slow writer, the young Poulenc eventually sequestered himself away from family and friends in a hotel in Cannes so that he could finish the work, although he was happy to entertain a visiting Igor Stravinsky who offered some advice ("quelques bons conseils") that Poulenc then applied to the first movement. The Trio is dedicated to Manuel de Falla, and the delighted Spanish composer saw to the premiere, which took place at the Salle des Agriculteurs in Paris on May 2, 1926, Poulenc at the piano. It was well received at the premiere, has been recorded many times since, and has remained a regular part of the woodwind ensemble repertoire. Reprint edition. | Oboe, Bassoon and Piano | |

| 7520 | 6E6DACC1-B270-4E04-BE5A-1B1E0CB87527 | EBM0650032 | Falling Man for Baritone and Mixed Octet | FALLING MAN for baritone and orchestra are based on Don DeLillo's 2007 novel about the events, aftermath, and changed lives of 9/11, a book which enthralled Kenneth Fuchs. DeLillo's unflinching description of raw terror and absolute chaos provided a standpoint from which Fuchs could begin to come to terms as a composer with the shocking and world-changing events of that fateful morning. The work is cast in the form of a dramatic scena for baritone voice and orchestra, and the principal melodic and harmonic elements are organized around a falling twelve-tone theme. This chamber arrangement by David Krane was created and performed in 2011 at the 9/11 Museum and Memorial. | Baritone, Piccolo/ Flute, Flute/Piccolo/Clarinet/Alto Sax, C Trumpet/Bb Flugelhorn, Bass Trombone, Percussion, Piano, Cello, Contrabass |
