The story, set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, tells of tragic love challenged by jealousy and loyalty to country and family. Commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House, it was premiered there on December 24th, 1871 in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, although, due to a limited audience, Verdi considered the performance at La Scala in Milan on February 8th, 1872 to be the true premiere. The Finale to Act II, which includes the Triumphal March and Ballet from the opera, has become a part of popular culture, showcasing the grand spectacle found in opera. Most of her compositional output took place during the 1920s and 1930s, with her turning towards the study of folk music in the late 1930s until her death in 1953. Her music had an influence on later composer, particularly Elliott Carter. The late Suite for Winds (1952) has been edited by Kurt Stone. Woodwind quintet. | Woodwind Quintet | |

| 7471 | 6DB28AB2-AA7D-42DC-AD70-58EAC8AB7B8A | R213 | On Wings of Song: Concerto for Piccolo and Wind Ensemble | Mendelssohn’s classic art song, "On Wings of Song," set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. The sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt’s transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz’s setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine’s love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden. This sense of music soaring through the skies made a wonderful image, and is so appropriate to the soaring nature of the piccolo. The piece was written for and dedicated to piccoloist Jan Gippo. Orchestra, wind ensemble and piano accompaniments all available from the publisher. (2010) ca. 20'. Movements: I. Over Distant, Murmuring Waves, II. Under Serene Moonlight, III. Dahl said of the piece, "First of all, I wanted it to be a piece that was full of size, a long piece, a substantial piece–a piece that, without apologies for its medium, would take its place alonside symphonic works of any other kind. But in addition, I hoped to make it a “light” piece. Something in the Serenade style, serenade “tone,” and perhaps even form." Sinfonietta was commissioned by the College Band Directors National Association in 1961 and received its premiere in 1962 by the USC Wind Ensemble under the direction of William Schaefer. | Concert Band |
