Title NameOn Wings of Song: Concerto for Piccolo and Wind Ensemble
Marketing CopyMendelssohn’s classic art song, "On Wings of Song," set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. The sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt’s transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz’s setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine’s love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden. This sense of music soaring through the skies made a wonderful image, and is so appropriate to the soaring nature of the piccolo. The piece was written for and dedicated to piccoloist Jan Gippo. Orchestra, wind ensemble and piano accompaniments all available from the publisher. (2010) ca. 20'. Movements: I. Over Distant, Murmuring Waves, II. Under Serene Moonlight, III. All Earthly Cares Entwining, IV. Shall Fade Away in Dreams

Program NotesOn Wings of Song, a concerto for piccolo (or flute) and orchestra or wind ensemble is gratefully dedicated to piccoloist Jan Gippo who commissioned the work and premiered it at the National Flute Association Convention in Anaheim, CA in August of 2010. Mendelssohn’s classic art song, "On Wings of Song," set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. Mendelssohn’s sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt’s transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz’s setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine’s love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden. This sense of music soaring through the skies made a wonderful image, and is so appropriate to the soaring nature of the piccolo.

The first movement, “Over distant murmuring waves,” is a lilting waltz. The music is somewhat mysterious, but also exhilarating as the soloist is flying over these waves, lifting above the earth, the piccolo playing spinning, cascading, or soaring gestures. The second movement, “Under serene moonlight,” is gentle, quiet, pastoral, and lyric, conveying a mood of ultimate peace and contentment. The third movement, “All Earthly cares entwining,” depicts the lovers flying through the sky, lifted by song, while below them is the tumult and chaos of those earthly cares, jumbled together, confused, and chaotic. The music is filled with dramatic energy, the soloist playing the most virtuosic and intense gestures of the piece. All this serves as a prelude to the fourth movement, “Shall fade away in dreams,” where the lovers arrive in a magic garden, a garden of dreams, and the music comes to a point of final repose and ultimate resolution. Mendelssohn’s song is quoted in the fourth movement, an homage to the artist who transports all those who listen to a beautiful place.
