Affiliating herself with nationalist composers such as Saint-Saëns and Gounod, her style was very much rooted in both Romantic and French tradition. Her tuneful and highly accessible works were also tremendous favorites in the United States. Chaminade's Album of Songs was originally published between 1892 and 1893 and included thirty-seven total songs across two volumes, with versions for both high voice and low voice made available. LudwigMasters has made all thirty-seven songs available, with three books for each volume, totaling six books each for both high and low voices. Included in Volume 2, Book 3: Viens, mon bien aimé (W290, 1892); Si j’étais jardinier (W296, 1893); Le Noël des Oiseaux (W297, 1893); Berceuse (W287, 1892); À l’inconnue (W288, 1892); Serenata (W272, 1888); L’Amour captif (W292, 1893). | Low Voice and Piano | |

L'isle Inconnue (transposed in E-flat) | The song cycle LES NUITS D’ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetie?re, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. L'île inconnue (The Unknown Island) asks for the unattainable, a place where love is eternal. Instrumentation: 2.1.2.2: 3.0.0.0: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Voice (medium voice). He dedicated the piece, with a libretto by Richard Gene, to pianist-composer Alfred Grnfeld. When Bertha Schwarz (stage name, Bianca Bianchi) sang the first performance at the Theater an der Wien on March 1, 1883, the audience loved it so much that they demanded an encore. The composer wasted no time in arranging a purely orchestral version, which the Strauss Orchestra premiered only seventeen days later. The waltz achieved great success during his Russian tour in 1886. This edition for reduced orchestra was arranged by Adolphe Dumont. Known best for his piano compositions, his most popular work is his Spanish Dances, Op. 12, composed for piano four-hands in 1876, which he later arranged for solo piano himself. Consisting of five pieces, Moszkowski stated that none of the themes are based on any known Spanish melodies, but they are entirely his own creations, written in a Spanish style. The work was so popular that Moszkowski's friend Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka (1847-1917) orchestrated Nos. 2 and 5 in 1879, while Valentin Frank (1858-1929) orchestrated Nos. 1, 3, and 4 in 1884. Each of these orchestrations is available from the publisher.
