Title NameSymphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor (3rd version)
Marketing CopyGustav Mahler (1860-1911) composed his SYMPHONY No. 5 in C-sharp minor in 1901 and 1902, mostly while staying at his vacation cottage at Maiernigg. The composer conducted the first performance in Cologne on October 18, 1904 with the Gurzenich Concert Orchestra. The work opens with a funeral march, introduced by a grim and dauntless trumpet solo which calls to mind the opening motif of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The 4th movement, the well-known, elegiac Adagietto, is often performed apart from the rest of the piece. It appeared, memorably, at the funeral of Robert Kennedy in 1968 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Revised several times, the symphony is here presented in its 1910 version.
