| 4887 | 468A8E77-A8F4-46AC-A318-B771FC86D75D | 50250198 | Arco Polo for Multi-Level Orchestra | This engaging piece for string orchestra is appropriate for any time of the year but would be especially fun for a summer orchestra concert. Arco Polo is the musical depiction of the well-known swimming pool game “Marco Polo.” The piece begins tutti pizzicato, but then the instruments “call out” to each other using their bows. Students and audience members can listen for the following: The calling and answering (sections take turns), playful splashing (grace notes between letter C and letter D and at the end), the annoyance of the violin sections when their calls are not answered (letter G), and the underwater response of the cellos and basses (near the end). This is a multi-level piece which makes it a practical choice for an orchestra which has students at varying skill levels. At its core, it is a level 1.5 piece and can stand alone as such, but with the addition of the advanced violin, viola, and cello parts it becomes even more challenging and fun. For yet another layer of fun, there is an optional improvisational section (between D and E) where students are randomly (perhaps secretly) selected to be the “caller” and the rest of the orchestra answers. As an extra surprise for the orchestra and audience as well, an audience member could be cued to call out to the orchestra. | String Orchestra (side by side Grades 1 and 3) | |

Spring is light and lively with birdsong and danceable rhythms, The Adoration of the Magi borrows from the Christmas songs "Veni, Veni Emanuel" and "Tu scende dalle stelle", and The Birth of Venus evokes the gentle waves in the painting. Respighi dedicated the piece to prominent music patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Instrumentation: 1.1.1.1: 1.1.0.0: Perc(2): Clst.Pno.Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). | 4899 | 46A6B2FA-19B6-4B67-98DE-B9EB79537859 | 10100427 | Patriotic Overture, A | A Patriotic Overture takes its melodic, harmonic and rhythmic components from three well-known American patriotic songs: America, the Beautiful; The Battle Hymn of the Republic; and Columbia, Gem of the Ocean. At no time does the composer try to arrange a medley of these works. Rather, Mr. Hearshen has composed a totally new work that uses fragments of known material in such a way as to always give the audience the sense of comfort that comes from familiarity. The composer’s affection for these tunes and what they represent is at the heart of the work. He has successfully used them in a contemporary setting without obscuring their essence. | Concert Band | |
| 4900 | 46A73DD0-08F7-4D03-A7E3-FD678BEA5620 | M201491 | Concerto for Viola in G, TWV 51:G9 | Georg Phillipp Telemann (1681-1767), among the most prolific composers with 900 or so works, is also notable for having written the first concerto for the viola. Written in four movements rather than the three that would later become standard, his CONCERTO FOR VIOLA IN G Major, TWV 51:G9 remains among the most popular for the instrument and bridges the gap between the high Baroque style and the lighter style galant that was emerging at the end of Telemann's life. | Viola and Piano |
