It is known to have been performed at a funeral, and was possibly a generic work intended for funerals. When the work was first published in the nineteenth century it was called a cantata, perhaps because it has an instrumental accompaniment. While it is not an a cappella work, modern scholarship accepts it is a motet. | SATB: 0.0.2.0: 0.3.2.0

Gabriel and Sylvain Saint-Étienne. It premiered on November 22, 1851 by the Opéra-National at the Théâtre Historique under the baton of Edmond Seveste. It tells the story of a young lieutenant Lorenz, who falls in love with Zora, a Brazilian native. Admiral Salvador, the man who brought her to Portugal for her education, decides to take her back to Brazil. Disguised as a sailor, Lorenz is discovered on board the ship, but when a storm forces them into a harbor, they are surrounded by a group of hostile natives. Recognizing Zora, they withdraw their weapons and Salvador decides to give his consent so that the two lovers can marry. In Act 3, Zora praises the cheerful song of a bird and its devotion to a mate in CHARMANT OISEAU (THOU BRILLIANT BIRD). | 3856 | 36A1BBA3-1E88-49A0-B667-60F47DFE6B22 | SU483 | Duo from Cantata No. 78 | Cantata No. 78, Jesu, der du meine Seele, was first performed on September IO, I724, for the I4th Sunday after Trinity. It is one of Bach's best known cantatas, having especially rich musical painting of the text. The duo, Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen Schritten ("We hasten with weak, yet eager steps"), was originally for soprano and alto and depicts the faltering yet persistent walk of the faithful who call upon Chdst to help them. The piano part (originally for continuo - organ and cello) shows this in nearly every bar with persistent eighth notes in a rising and falling pattern. | Trombone Duet with Piano Accompaniment
