| 3861 | 36B51344-A2D7-4CC0-9D53-7BD2CF70CD3C | A204602 | Karelia Suite, Op. 11 | The first significant success for Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), KARELIA MUSIC was commissioned for a lottery sponsored by the Viipuri Students' Association to foster education in Vyborg Province. Its first performance on November 13 at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki could scarcely be heard due to the rowdy and restless behavior of the audience. Ten days later, Sibelius conducted the overture, and three movements which he later developed into the KARELIA SUITE, Op. 11. The Intermezzo enshrines the courage of the Karelian people who stood up against their Lithuanian oppressors, followed by a somber and dignified Ballade based on a Karelian folk melody. The Alla Marcia, a brisk and sunny march, brings the work to a rousing conclusion. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2(1st dEH).2.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(3-4): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). It remains popular today, with songs such as the "Habanera" and "Toreador Song" among the best known of all opera arias. In Act II, the rousing Chanson Boheme (Gypsy Song) is sung by Carmen and her friends Frasquita and Mercédès in Pastia’s inn to entertain Zuniga and his fellow officers. Instrumentation: 2 (2nd d. | 3865 | 36C9C2D4-FA63-4956-BE2C-BCB50AE55798 | M189691 | Six Studies in English Folksong for Cello and Piano | Originally written in 1926 for cellist May Mukle with piano accompaniment, this collection follows the same format for each of the six English folk songs: presentation of the tune in the solo line, followed by a full iteration of the folk song in the piano with an ornamented solo line. Writing that his aim in setting the songs was for them to be "treated with love," Williams also transcribed these songs for violin, viola, and clarinet (all three available from the publisher along with the cello version) among other instruments. The first five songs in the collection are slow and quiet while the sixth, in contrast, is marked Allegro Vivace. Songs: I. Lovely on the Water, II. Spurn Point, III. Van Dieman's Land, IV. The Lady and the Dragon, V. She Borrowed Some of Her Mother's Gold, VI. As I walked over London Bridge. | Violoncello and Piano | |

A great deal of Lecuona’s music was first introduced to American audiences by Desi Arnaz, a fellow Cuban and Lucille Ball’s spouse. Andalucía (Suite Espagnole) was originally composed by Ernesto Lecuona for solo piano. This colorful and vibrant arrangement of the Malagueña, the sixth and final movement of the suite, by Irvin C. Kauffman for solo guitar, strings, brass, and percussion, features driving Latin rhythms that create a concert piece that’s truly exciting. | Solo Guitar: 0.0.0.0: 2.2.3.1: Perc: Str

Rhythmic excitement and strong ensemble figures (with some tricky yet fun accidentals for woodwinds) make this a musical contrast of storm and peace. | Full Orchestra: 2+Picc.1.2.1: (ASax.TSax): 2.3.2.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str
| 3871 | 36D36A09-ECF4-410D-9EE8-48CB5C2BC28B | A213802 | Rite of Spring, The (Le Sacre du Printemps) | This Critical Edition by Clinton Nieweg of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) is a result of a collaboration among several major orchestras. This corrected edition succeeds in addressing the numerous inconsistencies and mistakes from previous editions that resulted from Stravinsky's revisions, copyists' carelessness, and publishers' errors, with months of work producing over 21,000 changes through the consultation of eight different scores. While the ballet's May 29th, 1913 premiere in Paris by Ballets Russes at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées famously resulted in a riot, the work has long had a prominent place in orchestra repertoire, and ballet companies staging of the ballet has seen a resurgence over the years.
