Program NotesLuftkasteller is a Danish word that translates as 'air castles'. When used, it normally has a lightly sarcastic reference to the character and thoughts of persons who are constantly dreaming up new ideas or who are always living in the future without real contact with present realities. However the term is used here in reference to cloud shapes and to dreams -- 'air castles' which we must have in order to change or affect our own realities. Luftkasteller was purposely written to be within the technical capabilities of most orchestra, and its relative economy of forces, shortness, and familiar musical language should make it comprehensible to most listeners. Themes are quite distinct and often repeated. The work is formally constructed as a palindrome (consecutive pitch centers G-C-E-F-E-C-G), and has two parts. The first is rather amorphous while the second is a more defined dance. The hexachord of the first part contains all of the intervals used in both the horizontal lines and vertical sounds in the work. --Ann Gebuhr
