It has two unusual features: First, the "plainsong" idea is not an ancient Medieval plainsong, but written by the composer in the traditional plainsong style with text in Latin based on Isaiah 40:11. Second, it is not a set of variations in the traditional sense where each variation is presented in turn but rather the entire work consists of many variations and ideas based on the plainsong material, presented in a "fantasy" form. Recorded by Craig Hultgren, "Threads," Zimbel Records CD ZR102. | Cello | |

Feeling that it ought to be set to music, she wrote an anonymous letter to Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) imploring him to undertake the task. Completed in 1913, KOLOKOLA, Op. 35 (The Bells) premiered on November 30, 1913 at the Mariisnky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the composer at the baton. It was dedicated to Willem Mengelberg and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Later in life, Rachmaninoff declared that the choral symphony was his favorite of his own works. | 3891 | 37348B4B-8514-45DA-BEA7-C60321D77206 | A885202 | Ouvre Ton Coeur (A Minor; original key) | Ouvre ton cœur (Open your heart) dates from 1859, as George Bizet (1838-1875) was still attending the Paris Conservatory. Its Spanish flair anticipates the musical style he would later put to use in the opera Carmen. A bolero rhythm drives the passionate energy of the poem by Louis Delâtre, in which the singer implores their beloved to return their love "as a flower turns to the sun". The song demonstrates Bizet's early mastery of the harmonic color, delicate phrasing, and melodic invention for which he is so greatly admired today. Versions in the original key of A minor, and also transposed to G minor and B minor are also available from the publisher. | 3894 | 3745665B-B9A2-4D62-87AF-8589CDE2B4F4 | A131902 | Carmen: Act I (No. 1): Prelude | While it scandalized Parisian audiences at its premiere by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3rd, 1875, Georges Bizet's (1838-1875) CARMEN became, a mere decade later, one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the repertoire. It remains popular today, with songs such as the "Habanera" and "Toreador Song" among the best known of all opera arias. The rousing and popular Prelude to Act I often appears at the beginning of concert programs. Instrumentation: 2(2nd d. Picc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Perc(2-3): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). | 2(2nd d.
