382836403F54-5531-45A1-9D00-2A7F7B09753AA218702Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13: Winter Reveries (3rd version)Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) made his first foray into the symphonic genre, SYMPHONY No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13, in 1866. He had just accepted his new role as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory and it represents his earliest significant work. In the wake of a disastrous review of his graduation piece from César Cui, the composer labored to write the piece during a time of great physical and mental strain and persuaded himself that he would not live to see it completed. Subtitled WINTER REVERIES, it absorbed material from some of his earlier work. The first performance took place on February 15, 1868 in Moscow under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein. After the premiere of a revised version in 1883, the composer amended printing errors and added some phrase and dynamic markings for the third version, which is included in this Kalmus edition.
