Program Notes
Commissioned by the Teatro Teresa Carreno in Venezuela, "L'Histoire Tropical" was conceived as a homage to Igor Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat." Ricardo Lorenz's intention was to create a work that would bring Stravinsky's "L'Histoire" closer to Hispanic and Latin American audiences. For this purpose, he drew several parallels with Stravinsky's work, namely the orchestration and the general format of the piece. However, the fact that Lorenz resorts to a Venezuelan creole tale--which also carries a moral message--and utilizes typical caribbean dance forms (in a distorted fashion) makes his "L'Histoire" an appealing persuation for Hispanic audiences. The work was premiered in its original Spanish version on May 1986 in Caracas, Venezuela. It was subsequently revised and translated into English for its North American premiere in 1987.
