Affiliating herself with nationalist composers such as Saint-Saëns and Gounod, her style was very much rooted in both Romantic and French tradition. Her tuneful and highly accessible works were also tremendous favorites in the United States. Chaminade's Album of Songs was originally published between 1892 and 1893 and included thirty-seven total songs across two volumes, with versions for both high voice and low voice made available. LudwigMasters has made all thirty-seven songs available, with three books for each volume, totaling six books each for both high and low voices. Included in Volume 1, Book 3: Amour d'automne (W276, 1889); Souhait (W264, 1886); Colette (W285, 1891); L'absente (W271, 1886); L'anneau d'argent (W284, 1891); Amoroso (W283, 1891); Sur la plage (W286, 1892).High Voice and Piano
268725B74B4C-95D0-401E-8F70-978B8E7665FCB586Walk in an Irish Garden, AThis collection of songs was written and arranged for Sir James Galway as concert pieces by David Overton, his longtime arranger. They are all based to some extent on traditional Irish Melodies. The first three are contrasting tunes: Spinning Song, the beautiful slow melody She Moved Through the Fair, and the more up-tempo Star of the County Down. These were so successful in the original flute and piano version, as printed here, that Overton was requested to write versions for strings and for orchestra, which were equally successful and have formed a regular part of Galway’s concert repertoire. Badinereelerie is a more light-hearted work, first written for Sir James Galway in 1984. Since then, he has played it countless times as printed here, and in a version for flute and orchestra. The surprising mixture of Bach (and Handel and others) with reels and Irish traditional tunes, and even a few English traditional tunes thrown in for good measure, has delighted audiences all over the world. The piece’s rousing conclusion includes an optional switch to penny whistle, a practice that Galway writes, “I have always taken advantage of.”Flute (optional d Penny Whistle), Piano

269225C8EDAE-3095-457A-86D0-2B4A6B5B72A8A902902Norma: Act II, Scene 1, Duet (2 sopranos): Deh! con te, Mira O Norma (E-Flat) (excerpt)Norma is a two-act lyric tragedy by Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835). A leading example of the bel canto genre, the opera premiered at La Scala in Milan on December 26th, 1831. The story tells of a love triangle between Norma, the High priestess of the druids, her Roman lover, and a younger priestess for whom the Roman has fallen. This excerpt occurs in the first scene of Act II. After rejecting killing her two sons with the Roman Pollione as a solution, she instead chooses to entrust her children to the young priestess Adalgisa and Pollione so that they may live in the duet, "Deh! con te, con te li prendi" / "Please, take them with you." Adalgisa agrees but tells Norma that she intends to persuade Pollione to return to the mother of his children in another duet, "Mira, o Norma" / "Look, o Norma." This excerpt is transposed from the original key of F to E flat. A score has not been created for the E flat version, so none is included, but the score in the key of F is available separately from the publisher as A419501. These works were part of the composer's efforts to expand the solo repertoire for less commonly used instruments, writing to a friend, "At the moment I am concentrating my last reserves on giving rarely considered instruments the chance to be heard."
