Program Notes
Night Journey is music of dizzying, shifting pulses and ever changing instrumental timbres. After composing it and trying to find an appropriate title, I was reminded of watching colors and shapes dart by the window of a train during a night journey. Inside the train all is still while outside is a whirl of activity. This experience, familiar to us all, is a vivid (and I hope helpful) metaphor for the rhythmic, textural, timbral world of Night Journey. The piece was premiered by the Jacksonville Symphony in 1988 and also exists in a wind quintet version which was premiered by The Dorian Wind Quintet. --Bruce Adolphe

Review
"[Adolphe] speaks of the music as 'a tone poem in a mysterious mood. The image is one of a night train ride: colors appear, lights flicker and melt back into darkness.'
Indeed, an ostinato (heard mainly in the clarinet but often exchanged through the ensemble) suggests the sound of moving swiftly over the tracks. The harmonies are richly colored, far more plush than jarring--a dream that offers much pleasure for the sleeper and for attendant listeners.

A great deal of skill went into the piece, and an equal measure was evident in the performance. Yesterday's artists included three Louisville Orchestra principals: flutist Kathleen Karr, oboist Marion Gibson and bassoonist Matthew Karr, plus colleagues Dallas Tidwell (clarinet) and Diana Morgen (horn).
--Andrew Adler, The Courier-Journal
