Capriccio II is a response to, a rethinking of, the original Capriccio, now for two pianos instead of piano and orchestra. The overall mood is one of joyous abandon, with fast, rather athletic music surrounding a central chaconne of lyric intensity. Capriccio II was completed in March 2016, with premiere performances by HOCKET in Fall 2016. | Two Pianos

| 2648 | 251A3E60-35FE-4D45-9DA2-9DA388F0EBD0 | B471 | 12 Ariettas | Vincenzo Righini (1756-1812) began his career as a well-known opera tenor until vocal damage drove him to begin composing himself. ( He is most well-known for his operas, sacred music and songs.) He drew the attention of the Emperor in Vienna in 1780 whose patronage make him one of the most sought after voice teachers in Vienna and Berlin, where he later became Kapellmeister and Director of the Italian Opera. The Ariettas are small songs, less elaborate than arias, and they some bear interesting influences; many of the themes show an affinity for Mozart; No. 3 has a Romantic feeling, a "Beethovenesque" quality; Nos. 11 and 12 foreshadow Rossini and Bellini. This edition by Edwin Penhorwood includes editors' additons and performing suggestions in brackets, but the indications are only one suggestion as these songs will benefit from the imagination of the performer limited only by the style of the period and the spirit of the composition. Songs: 1. Placido zeffiretto, 2. Pur nel sonno almen talora, 3. Io lo so che il bel sembiante, 4. Or che il cielo a me ti rende, 5. Affetti, non turbate, 6. D'un Genio che m'accende, 7. Sol che un istante io miri, 8. Aure amiche, ah! non spirate, 9. Mi lagnero tacendo, 10. Vorrei di te fidarmi, 11. T'intendo, si, mio cor, 12. Se amor l'abbandona | Vocal | |

Careful consideration has been given with respect to the technical requirements of beginning musicians in this score. As suggested by the title, the work is also ideal as an occasional piece at ceremonies. This arrangement for flexible instrumentation by Aric Branchfield can be played by any SSATB combination of instruments with optional percussion, from 5 players through large ensembles. | Any SSATB combination of instruments with optional percussion, from 5 players through large ensembles

Affiliating herself with nationalist composers such as Saint-Saëns and Gounod, her style was very much rooted in both Romantic and French tradition. Her tuneful and highly accessible works were also tremendous favorites in the United States. Chaminade's Album of Songs was originally published between 1892 and 1893 and included thirty-seven total songs across two volumes, with versions for both high voice and low voice made available. LudwigMasters has made all thirty-seven songs available, with three books for each volume, totaling six books each for both high and low voices. Included in Volume 1, Book 3: Amour d'automne (W276, 1889); Souhait (W264, 1886); Colette (W285, 1891); L'absente (W271, 1886); L'anneau d'argent (W284, 1891); Amoroso (W283, 1891); Sur la plage (W286, 1892). | Low Voice and Piano

Ravel later orchestrated both the third movement called "Une barque sur l'océan" ("A Boat on the Ocean" - dedicated to Paul Sordes) and the fourth movement named "Alborada del gracioso" ("The Jester's Aubade" - dedicated to Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi) himself. Ernesto Halffter later orchestrated the fifth movement ("La vallée des cloches" - "The Valley of the Bells" - dedicated to Maurice Delage), as did Percy Grainger, while Felix Günther scored movement two ("Oiseaux tristes" - "Sad Birds" - dedicated to Ricardo Viñes). Orchestrations of movement one ("Noctuelles" - "Moths" - dedicated to Léon-Paul Fargue) are more recent. This edition of the composer's transcription of "Alborada del Gracioso" has been edited by Clinton Nieweg and Nancy Bradburd.
