Written for fellow composer and virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, the soloist initially deemed the work not virtuosic enough to satisfy audiences, although time and seeing the work win success for other soloists led to a revived enthusiasm and the concerto's inclusion in Sarasate's repertoire. Saint-Saëns places the dramatic and technical passages in the 1st and 3rd movements, while the 2nd movement is graceful and songlike. This concerto, along with the INTRODUCTION AND RONDO CAPRICCIOSO, Op. 28, and the HAVANAISE, Op. 83, remain the most popular works for violin and orchestra by Saint-Saëns. Other students included composers Matteo Capranica and Joseph Haydn. This setting of Psalm 91 utilizes the Latin text. The 91st psalm of the Book of Psalms, generally known in English by its first verse in the King James Version: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." In the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and in its Latin translation Vulgate, this psalm is Psalm 90 in a slightly different numbering system. In Latin, it is known as 'Qui habitat". As a psalm of protection, it is commonly invoked in times of hardship. | SSAA Chorus, String Orchestra | |

Originally intended to be written by Glazunov's friend Riccardo Drigo, the two composers swapped projects so that Glazunov wrote THE SEASONS while Drigo composed LES MILLIONS D'ARLEQUIN. The cast of THE SEASONS consists of various types of season weather, fauna and flora associated with some seasons, and Bacchus, Bacchante, the Faun, and Satyrs of Greek mythology. The work consists of four tableaus, one for each season. The ballet premiered on February 20, 1900, in St. Petersburg at the Hermitage Imperial Theatre by the Orchestra of the Imperial Theatre, Riccardo Drigo conducting.
