15871E8F265EA-6CE7-4496-9FA0-994C38E76706S1038CBFirst Symphony, Op. 35Composed during the summer and fall of 1974, Barnes’ FIRST SYMPHONY, Op. 35 was his master’s thesis at The University of Kansas. It was premiered in the spring semester of 1976 by their Symphonic Band, Robert E. Foster conducting. The following year, the symphony was awarded the American Bandmasters Ostwald Composition prize, which led to a second performance (of only the first two movements) by the Northwestern Wind Ensemble at the American Bandmasters convention with Col. Jack Cline (U.S Marine Band) conducting. Following this performance, Barnes submitted the work to several publishers, all of which declined on the basis it was too long and difficult to be “marketable.” For this reason, Barnes set the work aside and there it remained until 2022, when an offer came from the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra to record all nine of Barnes’ symphonies to help celebrate their 100th anniversary. Barnes seized the opportunity, engraving all four movements, with revisions and corrections, an effort that took seven days a week for two months to complete. As a result, after almost fifty years, all nine of the Barnes symphonies are finally available for performance. 11x14 oversized score.Concert Band

15877E902226E-1BA8-4ACC-B0BF-538F5F200D47X622503Silvermine Suite for Flute and GuitarSilvermine Suite for Flute and Guitar was composed especially to commemorate the opening of Sara Victoria Hall at the Silvermine Guild for the Arts (in Silvermine, CT). Visual Artist, Diane Wege, commissioned this new work after having been introduced to the music of Gwyneth Walker at a lecture given by the composer at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan in 1998.
The Suite is in four short movements. “Two By Two” is a light exchange of musical motives between the two instruments. “A Touch of Grace” is theme-and-accompaniment in texture. “Step Lightly” moves at a brisk pace. The title may refer to the guitarist, who often must enter off the beat, and quickly!
“Swing Low” presents the familiar spiritual, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” in a swing rhythm.

15880E905A5FC-F853-4274-A7D8-1FC8308888F2A293202Don Giovanni, K. 527: Act II, Nos. 16 & 17: Canzonetta (Serenade): Deh vieni alla finestra (baritone)Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote the two-act opera DON GIOVANNI, K. 527, in 1787 following a mmission from Prague impresario Pasquale Bondini. With the success of THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, Mozart turned to the librettist for that opera, Lorenzo Da Ponte, for this new project. The opera tells the story of Don Giovanni, an arrogant and promiscuous nobleman who abuses everyone he meets, killing the father of a woman he assaulted, attempting to seduce other women and abandoning the one he has already seduced. At the end, the man he had killed returns as a ghost and demands Don Giovanni's repentance. Don Giovanni refuses, and is dragged to Hell, with the cast telling the audience that "Evildoers always come to an evil end." The opera premiered in Prague at the Estates Theatre on October 29th, 1787, with Mozart conducting, and was very successful. The opera remains not only one of the best by Mozart, but it is considered one of the crown jewels of the opera repertoire. In Act 2, Don Giovanni's servant Leporello distracts his master’s old flame, Donna Elvira, while Don Giovanni serenades her maid with a mandolin, singing DEH, VIENI ALLA FINESTRA (AH, COME TO THE WINDOW).
