Following the example of his renowned father, Karl gained wide recognition as a violinist, violist, and composer. Noted primarily as an orchestral composer, his Four Divertimenti for two clarinets, two horns, and two bassoons are among the few chamber pieces that have not been lost as a result of the bombing of the Berlin Public Library during World War II. These editions by Harry H. Hall have been meticulously researched, documented, and edited to bring this music back to the public. He often preferred living in Germany, where he felt that his music had more recognition. His oeuvre is gradually being rediscovered, including the OCTET in E-flat Major, Op. 71. Completed in 1879, the work is scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, two bassoons, and two horns. The Leipzig publisher Carl Kistner published it three years later. It has four movements: 1. 14929DBA8AC61-785E-40CD-BF3A-4FE1B2E9A84BA227602Wasps, The: OvertureThe Cambridge Greek Play produced Aristophane's The Wasps as Trinity College, Cambridge in 1909, and Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was asked to compose incidental music to accompany the production. Scored for tenor and baritone solos, male chorus, and orchestra, the lengthy work averages around an hour and forty-five minutes for a complete performance and so is not programmed often. Vaughan Williams later extracted the overture and four additional movements to create suite. But the most popular stand-alone concert work from the original incidental music is the Overture.
