The libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz is based on the play LE COMTE DE COMMINGES by François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d’Arnaud. On the brink of taking his monastic vows, the young novice Fernand declares that he has fallen in love with a lady whose identity remains unrevealed to him. He discovers her to be Léonor, the mistress of Alfonso XI, the King of Castile. Receiving an army commission from her, he earns a prize from the king himself for his success on the battlefield. When he announces his wish to marry Léonor, further revelations lead to her arrest. He decides to return to monastic life, but her exhausted appearance persuades him to declare his love for her again before she dies in his arms. The opera premiered at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris on December 2, 1840. In the Act 3 aria O MIO FERNANDO, Léonor sings of both her desire to marry Fernando and the fear of bringing him dishonor. While writing the sonata I began to realize what a “symphonic” instrument the guitar really is, and how well idiomatic guitar figurations might translate to the orchestra. As the title suggests, Vivace is a short lively piece tinged with spiritual uplift. Supported by a steady rhythmic ostinato in stretto, the broad melody (in slow harmonic rhythm) is presented first in the highest voice and then answered in a lower one. The dovetailing of gestures and its consequent antiphonal character permeate the movement. Often the melody is presented “in harmony” at the interval of the 7th or 9th. As with many of my recent compositions, variation, color and drama are enhanced by the juxtaposition of pandiatonic passages with those that are chromatic and dissonant.

Vivace has been recorded by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra on MSR Classics [MS 1582]. --Peter Lieuwen

14980DC515A5B-2433-4D9C-93AE-9CB16B5C8B57A915402Suor Angelica: Amici fiori (Original and Revised Versions of the Abandoned Aria for Angelica)SUOR ANGELICA (SISTER ANGELICA) is a one-act opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). The second opera in a trio known as Il trittico (The Triptych), each one dealing with the concealment of a death, the work premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918. It tells the story of a 17th century nun, Angelica, who has been placed in a convent by her family, whom she has not seen for seven years. Her aunt, the Princess, arrives after all this time to ask Angelica to sign away her inheritance. Angelica refuses to do so, not for herself, but for her son whose birth was the reason for her being placed in the convent. The Princess then informs her that her son had died two years previously. "Amici Fiori" (Flower Friends) was the original aria intended to be sung by Angelica, a listing of the flowers she will use to make a poison so that she may join her son in Heaven. One of Puccini's boldest and most beautiful harmonic ventures, bordering on atonality, most sopranos omitted it early on, despite Puccini's pleas to include it. The aria has since been completely removed from the opera. Michael Kaye has edited this abandoned aria to include both the original and revised versions.
