Under the influence of Chopin at the age of 24, Scriabin only completed it after persistent pressure from his publisher Belyayev. Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov assisted him with the orchestration. The work premiered on October 23, 1897 in Odessa with the composer performing the solo part under the baton of Vasily Safonov. It utilizes all extant notated and aural materials for Maria la O for its creation. It was edited 2001-2011 by Dr. Evan Hause. The orchestration in this edition is fully computer-engraved. The percussion parts, mostly unnotated in the original materials, were transcribed and edited for this edition, yet they still allow for the freedom to take a traditional, improvisatory approach to the music as per the original. This excerpt is taken from the new edition.Soprano and Piano

By a 1987 act of the U.S. Congress, it is the official National March of the United States of America, and it is considered by many to be Sousa's Magnum Opus. This orchestration by Leopold Stokowski includes a foreword that explains the great conductor's thoughts on dynamics for the work based on Sousa's performance practices. Mozart (1756-1791) between 1782 and 1783. Serenades at the time were generally considered light music for relaxed entertainment, often to be performed outdoors by an ensemble of wind instruments, not taken seriously in concert settings and rarely set in a minor key. Mozart, however, composed three wind serenades after moving to Vienna in 1781, and all are far more serious works than customary for the genre, including this one in C minor written for wind octet (0.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0). This performance edition has been completed by Frederick Fennell, who conducted a performance of his edition made by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, recorded on their album SERENADES (KOCD-3567).0.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0

The shamans, who guard their icaros jealously, believe that they learn these melodies from the spirits of specific "teacher plants." While the piece is also influenced by the music of ancient and recent ritual cultures far from the Amazon basin - from the deserts of the Middle East to the dancefloors of Europe - it is about learning and singing a song that allows us to speak to the gods.
As a concert composer, Joshua Penman has received commissions from the Albany Symphony, New York Youth Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Foundation for Universal Sacred Music, Prism Quartet, Now Ensemble, Arraymusic, Bang on a Can, Lionheart, East Coast Chamber Orchestra, and Nouvel Ensemble Moderne.
