Under the influence of Chopin at the age of 24, Scriabin only completed it after persistent pressure from his publisher Belyayev. Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov assisted him with the orchestration. The work premiered on October 23, 1897 in Odessa with the composer performing the solo part under the baton of Vasily Safonov.
