The composer chose two poems written by his friend Maurice Bouchor as source material, weaving dark Tristan-esque imagery of a windswept sea with flower symbolism expressing the memory of love and unassuaged desire. He completed a revised version in 1893, after which it finally found its first audience on February 21 in Brussels, the composer playing the score from the piano, Désiré Demest as the soloist. On April 8, 1893, the Société Nationale de Musique premiered the full orchestra version with Éléonore Blanc performing the vocal part. Versions for high voice in G (original key) and medium voice in F (transposed) are available from the publisher. Movements: I. La Fleur des eaux; Ia. Interlude; II. La Mort de l'amour. His CAVATINE, Op. 144 (1915) constituted his single foray for the trombone, though the brilliant work shows that he clearly had a great feel for the instrument. Showing the instruments lyrical and romantic side, this early solo work for the instrument is a wonderful addition to any recital or concert.Trombone and Piano

12856BBE0B5B7-019A-4667-92E6-31BDAC7EA975S973CBHunt, The (No. 9, "September" from "The Seasons")Tchaikovsky composed his twelve character pieces for piano, The Seasons, while he was writing his popular ballet, Swan Lake. Each piece in The Seasons depicts a different month of the year in Russia. The original publication of September: The Hunt included an epigraph at the start of the piece - a small poem by Alexander Pushkin. This energetic arrangement for symphonic band by Nathan Jones opens with an octave fanfare between the winds and brass. Tchaikovsky’s colorful harmony speaks here, with passing chromaticism adding color to the music. The fanfare theme is transformed in the quiet central section, still shifting to the minor mode with short solo passages for flute, bassoon, trumpet, xylophone and oboe (cued in flutes). The segue back into the opening fanfare is clever, with the notes leading through several keys before concluding in the major with a short reprise of the initial theme.Concert Band

12859BBE680C8-5CD1-48F5-8D93-E6A4C8DFBCF7A300002Tosca: Act III, Aria: E lucevan le stelle (tenor) (excerpt)Tosca is a melodramatic opera in three acts set in Rome in June, 1800, with the Kingdom of Naple’s control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, as well as some of Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias. With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on a play by French playwright Victorien Sardou. The opera was an immediate success with the public upon its premiere in 1900, and its characters continue to fascinate both performers and audiences as the work remains one of the most frequently performed operas. The tenor aria E lucevan le stelle takes place during the 3rd act by Mario Cavaradossi, as he waits for his execution. It is among the most famous of opera arias, and is commonly included on recitals and encores.
