Based on a tragic poem by Carlos Fernández Shaw called El Chavalillo (The Little Lass), it tells the story of a young gypsy girl who is passionately in love with a well-to-do young man. When she learns that he must marry a woman in his social class, she crashes the wedding, the young man denies he knows her, then she falls dead at his feet with a broken heart as a sign of contempt for her former lover. Despite winning the price, no premiere materialized until the Casino Municipal in Nice staged the work on April 1, 1913. After some suggestions from Claude Debussy, de Falla revised the work into the standard version. While the opera is staged irregularly, some of its sections are popular for concert performance. Among those is Danza Española No. 1 (Spanish Dance No. 1), originally published as Interlude and Dance. In the opera, it takes place at the betrothal celebration of the young man and the woman he must marry. In the dance, the infectious theme moves about the orchestra as a contrast to the melancholy (for the gypsy girl) of the story surrounding this party. As a world premiere with Shaw unfortunately never materialized, Foss later gave the manuscript to Richard Stoltzman just before his death 60 years later. Though the two concertized together for many years, a performance of the Elegy would not yet come to pass. Finally, Stoltzman edited this beautiful work and presented the world premiere transcription for clarinet and piano in 2014, unveiling this previously unknown Foss gem to audiences and clarinetists for the first time. Full orchestra materials are also available on rental from the publisher, as well as a piano reduction. | Clarinet, Piano | |

| 12756 | BA81A141-1417-4D21-8314-D38A677F469A | B387602 | A Christmas Intrada | The celebration of the Nativity has called forth countless songs, dances, carols , plays and combinations of these, involving both vocal and instrumental forces, throughout the centuries, intertwining the feeling of radiant joy and infinite tenderness in many different ways. A CHRISTMAS INTRA DA represents an attempt to portray, in musical terms alone, five contrasting moods associated with the festivities of the Christmas season. These five sections are played without pause. They are: FANFARE: CHRISTUS NATUS EST for brass, chimes, bells and percussion only; LULLABY FOR THE CHRIST CHILD played by the woodwinds; PROCESSIONAL OF THE KINGS AND SHEPHERDS played by the full group; CAROL FOR THE HOLY NIGHT for woodwinds, saxophones and muted brass; and, finally, WASSAIL AND ALLELUIA beginning with the bells and chimes alone, and gradually growing to include not only the full group, but also antiphonal brass choirs, to bring the entire work to a joyous and triumphant conclusion. A CHRISTMAS INTRADA was commissioned by the Middle Tennessee State University Band and dedicated to the bands who annually participate in the Contest of Champions, on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary (1981). The first performance took place on that occasion, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, October 23rd, 1981, with the U.S. Marine Band, plus antiphonal brass choirs.
