| 12724 | BA056A37-9B9F-4697-839D-6282DB143CB9 | R213FO | On Wings of Song: Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra | Mendelssohn’s classic art song, "On Wings of Song," set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. The sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt’s transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz’s setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine’s love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden. This sense of music soaring through the skies made a wonderful image, and is so appropriate to the soaring nature of the piccolo. The piece was written for and dedicated to piccoloist Jan Gippo. Orchestra, wind ensemble and piano accompaniments all available from the publisher. (2010) ca. 20'. Movements: I. Over Distant, Murmuring Waves, II. Under Serene Moonlight, III. Writing the libretto himself based on historical sources, Mussorgsky's opera in five acts relates the 1682 rebellion of Prince Ivan Khovansky and the Old Believers against the regent Sofia Alekseyevna and the two young joint Tsars Peter the Great and Ivan V. As the work was almost wholly in piano score format when the composer died, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov undertook to complete, revise, and orchestrate the opera between 1881 and 1882. The world premiere of the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration took place in St. Petersburg on February 21, 1886, presented by artists of the Russian Opera Society. The INTRODUCTION to Act I, subtitled DAWN OVER THE MOSCOW RIVER, prepares the scene before a drunken Streltsy (the decommissioned elite soldiers fanatically loyal to Prince Ivan Khovansky) named Kuzka enters the Red Square and begins to sing. His choral music was extremely popular in its era both in England and in the United States, with his most popular work, The Holy City, the most performed choral work in English history at the time of Gaul's death. The sacred cantata The Holy City includes 16 numbers across two parts with text based on two hymns, a verse from Milton, three verses from the Te Deum, and scripture. It premiered at the Birmingham Musical Festival for which it was written on August 30th, 1882. The beautiful List! the cherubic host is the penultimate piece in the larger work. | 12739 | BA4BA32B-B516-4C8D-A917-8B6212974CB3 | S457CB | The Seventh Seal | The work's title is taken from the last seal in the book of Revelations. The seventh seal, being a culmination of the first six, denotes the emotional program of this work. The first movement is thematically based on the Dies Irae (day of wrath). Movement two is a treatment of a three-note interval sequence that has been associated with the pathos through the centuries, including in Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata, "Dido's Lament" by Purcell, and the from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique". The last movement is built around the first measure of the Moravian hymn, "Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs" by John Antes. It was commissioned by Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Tau Beta Sigma. With this commission, these two national fraternal societies for young men and women in collegiate bands continue their tradition of encouraging the contemporary composer to write for the modern concert band. | Concert Band | |
