The commission came about after von Bülow met and conducted the young composer's Serenade in Eb for thirteen instruments, Op. 7 (1881), and requested another piece with the same instrumentation. The premiere of the Suite, and the fact that Strauss conducted it, was a major contributor to the young man's musical career. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2+CtrBsn (or Tuba): 4.0.0.0. Movements: I. First performed on February 16, 1892 in Vienna, it quickly reached the stage of the Theatre Lyrique in Paris but faltered due to its serious subject matter. The growing success of Massenet's opera Manon allowed it to be introduced to Germany. From there, it achieved fame in opera houses across the world. In the third act, Werther sings Pourquoi me réveiller? (Why do you awaken me, oh breath of spring?), contrasting his blissful realization that Charlotte has accepted his love with the impending realization that their happiness cannot last. 11451a791e9f9-9e3a-11f0-a418-0022482c9682A941590Tahiti Trot, Op. 16TAHITI TROT, Op. 16 is an arrangement by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) for orchestra paraphrasing the song "Tea for Two" from the musical NO, NO, NANETTE by Vincent Youmans. It was composed in 1927 as a result of a bet between Shostakovich and the score’s dedicatee, Nicolai Malko, that the composer should finish the orchestration in under an hour. Shostakovich completed the orchestration in forty-five minutes. It premiered at the Moscow Conservatory on November, 25, 1928 conducted by Malko. The work was initially very popular, but Shostakovich was quickly forced to renounce the work due to the turbulent political environment in the Soviet Union during the 1928/1929 period, and TAHITI TROT was considered lost until reconstructed in the early 1980s by Gennady Rozhdestvensky from the orchestral parts provided him by Malko's widow. It now remains part of the standard repertoire for lighter music and pops concerts. Instrumentation: 1+Picc.2.1.1: 4.2.1.0: Timp. Perc(3-4): Clst.Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). It was even suggested that Kraft had composed the work himself, though a 1951 discovery of Haydn’s autograph score has put the theory to rest. Original advertisements for the work named James Cervetto as the soloist for the premier on March 14, 1784 in Hannover Square, London. This concerto is considered to be one of the greatest works for cello of the classical era. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Vc in Set. The story, set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, tells of tragic love challenged by jealousy and loyalty to country and family. Commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House, it was premiered there on December 24th, 1871 in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, although, due to a limited audience, Verdi considered the performance at La Scala in Milan on February 8th, 1872 to be the true premiere. 3(3rd dPicc).2+EH.2+BCl.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Hp: Str (4-4-3-3-3): Onstage/Banda (29 Winds, Brass, Perc, Hp): Vocal soli (8 roles, SSATTBBB): Chorus.3(3rd dPicc).2+EH.2+BCl.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Hp: Str (4-4-3-3-3): Onstage/Banda (29 Winds, Brass, Perc, Hp): Vocal soli (8 roles, SSATTBBB): Chorus

There is a middle passage that sounds slower because of the note values, but the work remains at a constant tempo from beginning to end. This can be an effective opener or closer for your young students.Concert Band
