Program NotesI like to compose music that is challenging, interesting and spiritually uplifting for both the performers and the audience. Occasionally, I may stretch the musicality of the performers, but never for the sake of technical virtuosity along as it is the synergistic effect of the ensemble that is most important. As a composer who is attracted to the coloristic orchestral possibilities suggested by extra-musical events, the idea of composing a work for the Pacific Symphony's 100th anniversary of flight program was very appealing to me. The title of this work -- "on laughter-silvered wings" -- is taken from the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr., which I found to be rich with musical imagery. "on laughter-silvered wings" seeks to capture the dream, drama, and exhilaration of the phenomena of light. --Peter Lieuwen
