In the middle section, at m. 23, you can hear the refreshing breeze with the pizzicatos. From m. 31, the waves and the wind are coming to the ship. Through a vast web of leitmotifs, melodic fragments which represent a character, place, or concept, the Ring cycle weaves a story of greed and betrayal as the coveted gold, snatched from the depths of the Rhine, sets into motion a thread of events that will ultimately consume the realm of the gods. SIEGFRIED, the third opera in the tetralogy, features the titular hero who forges Nothung from its broken fragments and slays Fafner the dragon, consequently winning the Reingold. Accidentally drinking its blood, he gains the ability to understand birdsong. A bird tells him to seek the Valkyrie Brunnhilde, sleeping eternally on the top of a mountain protected by magical fire. The opera received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festpielhaus on August 16, 1876, during the first complete performance of the Ring Cycle. Reprint edition. It tells the tale of a peasant girl who, falling prey to the deceitful and selfish flirtations of a betrothed noblemen (Albrecht), dies of a broken heart when the truth is revealed. In death, she joins the wilis, ghostly spirits of girls who have died before their wedding day and mercilessly make any man they come across dance to death. But when the repentant Albrecht is caught in the wilis' snare, a forgiving Giselle saves her former beloved, which prevents her from becoming a wili herself. The ballet was an immediate success upon its premiere and remains a major part of the repertoire. This edition is by William McDermott.
