Composed in 1890, it was not heard in concert until Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the premiere at the Delius Festival in 1946. Like many of his works, it eschews narrative for evocative mood setting which he encouraged listeners to interpret as they wish. Instrumentation: 3 (3rd d. A symphonic poem based on Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem L’après-midi d’un faune, the work is simultaneously among Debussy’s most famous, a masterpiece of Impressionist composition, and a turning point in the history of Western music. Mallarmé’s poem depicts a faun playing his panpipes who fails in his amorous pursuit of some passing nymphs, then lays down to sleep after the effort to maybe recapture it all in a dream. While not a tone poem in the strict sense, it does evoke the erotic feeling of the text. It Includes one of the most well-known orchestral flute solos in the repertoire, and the music was set to a short and highly controversial ballet in 1912 by famed dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. 1053999C0A2FA-CF0D-4C58-98F0-D4AE06F6D5E7A799002Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70Souvenir de Florence, a romantic masterwork full of virtuosity and melodic invention, was originally composed in 1890 as a string sextet, dedicated to the Saint Petersburg Chamber Society. Tchaikovsky wrote of the piece that he was “in essence, composing for the orchestra, and only then arranging it for six strings.” This arrangement, by Lucas Drew, is a string orchestra transcription that adds a Double Bass part to the original six voices. The ebullient first movement, Allegro con spirito, develops an exciting and memorable Florentine theme. The second movement, Adagio cantabile e con moto, showcases the composer’s graceful melodic writing. The third movement is a light balletic scherzo and is followed by the passionate final movement, which incorporates traditional Slavic folk dances.
