| 9812 | 8FA91AA0-FB8D-4697-B633-DAE7E715A571 | A148402 | Ruslan and Ludmilla: Overture | This rollicking overture, one of the best known orchestral showpieces in the West, providing a challenge for all musicians, particularly the bassists. Perfect in style and duration for either the first work on a program or an encore, this work incorporates melodies patterned on folk music, and it is scored in lavish orchestral colors. While Glinka's second opera is unfortunately performed irregularly outside of Russia, this overture has become very familiar to Western concert-goers. Reprint edition including tranposed parts for clarinets, horns, trumpets and trombones. | 9814 | 8FB0CB26-1907-4513-8AEF-F3E788A07297 | 10100558 | Small Town Sketches | Each of the four movements in this original suite depicts an aspect of life in a typical smaller community. Concert in the Park is a bold opener reminiscent of a summer evening concert. Winter Walk depicts a gentle journey through town on a chilly winter day. The music of Friday Night Football will remind many of school fight songs ending with a trumpeter's urgent cheer. County Fair portrays all of the frenetic energy and activity associated with this beloved institution. Range requirements for the brass family may be of some concern in the opening movement. | 9817 | 8FB54518-C437-48C0-B335-29A8DF27DABE | B385 | 17 Vocalises | The vocalises by Marco Bordogni provide excellent practice material for trombone students. In order to make these melodious exercises even more interesting for both the student and the teacher, the arranger has composed second parts in contrapuntal form resulting in duets which are pleasing as well as practical. The added second part is generally somewhat more difficult than the original and may be considered to be the teacher’s part. However, as the student progresses, they should master both parts. Theses pieces may also be performed by other like bass clef instruments. | 2 Trombones | |

Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," the original 1892 production, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Saint Petersburg, was not considered a success, although the 20-minute suite extracted by the composer was. Starting in the 1960s, the popularity of the full ballet has grown enormously, with frequent performances every Christmas season among the major ballet companies. In 1850, Brahms was introduced to “gypsy-style” music through Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi, including the csárdás “Bártfai emlék” (Memories of Bártfa) by Hungarian composer Béla Kéler, which became the basis for Hungarian Dance No. 5. Arranged for many different instruments and ensembles over the years, this orchestration by Albert Parlow of Hungarian Dances Nos. 11 through 16 was published in 1881.
