Wedge, completed in December 1990, is a 10-minute overture for orchestra. Mr. Crockett's pieces usually begin their lives without names; titles become increasingly insistent during the process of composition. Some pieces reveal names only after they are complete, or nearly so; others come forward much sooner. In this case, "untitled" became Wedge about 2/3 of the way through this composition. To get a sense of the piece in advance, think of the word "wedge" in various shades of meaning, both as a noun and as a verb.
