First performed on February 16, 1892 in Vienna, it quickly reached the stage of the Theatre Lyrique in Paris but faltered due to its serious subject matter. The growing success of Massenet's opera MANON allowed it to be introduced to Germany. From there, it achieved fame in opera houses across the world. Reprint edition. Instrumentation: 2(2nd d. It consists of a potpourri of tunes in various styles, ranging from a drunken waltz to symphonic jazz. Like most of Perillo’s work, its celebratory character seems frequently tempered by ominous undercurrents, and this duality validates much thematic invention that might otherwise simply sound trite." -David Hurwitz, Classics Today. Recorded by the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Yuval Waldman, conductor on Centaur records. | orchestra | |

| 9317 | 88B10C36-23F5-4EC8-B079-C026DA4C326F | A170902 | Symphony No. 5 in D, Op. 107: Reformation | Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his Symphony No. 5 in D, Op. 107 'Reformation' in 1830. It was composed to honor the 300th anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession, a Lutheran holiday that celebrates the Presentation of the Confession to Emperor Charles V in 1530. The work was actually the second large symphonic work composed by Mendelssohn, but it is referred to as the fifth as it was published in 1868, 21 years after the composer's death. The moniker 'Reformation Symphony' was given to the work by Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. While it was supposed to first be played in Paris in December of 1831, the musicians refused to perform it, complaining that it had too much counterpoint and lacked melody. The actual premiere occurred in Berlin November 15, 1832. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2+CBsn: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). | 2.2.2.2+CBsn: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) | |

| 9320 | 88C1F4BC-F711-4BBB-A2FF-597BFF75994C | S511035 | Three Solos for Violin and Piano from SWAN LAKE | Concertmaster solos in Tchaikovsky’s music take a prominent place. His third and fourth Suite (Mozartiana) and the second movement of the Piano Concerto No.2 feature the solo violin. In the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg, the violin solos were performed by the Solo Violinist of the Tsar, a title bestowed by the tsar upon the finest violinists in all of Russia. As the ballet solos were performed by the likes of Henri Wieniawski and Leopold Auer, the composers gave free reign to their creative inspiration and wrote some of their most gorgeous lyrical and virtuoso music for solo violin. The White Swan Pas De Deux and the Black Swan Pas De Deux are of extraordinary beauty expressing love and impending drama. The Russian Dance is a virtuoso showpiece foreshadowing the last movement of the composer’s violin concerto. | Violin, Piano |
