92698807991D-BFAD-42E5-B137-9E82B9EE863A50130010Blessed Are They (flex band)Johannes Brahms was not a religious man in the usual sense of the term, so it should be of no surprise that when he wrote the German Requiem; it did not follow the prescribed five movement form of the traditional requiem mass, but instead contained seven movements. The first time Brahms combined orchestra with chorus and soloists, it is considered to be his choral masterwork. While the style is unabashedly romantic with all the depth and beauty associated with the music of Brahms, the form is clearly influenced by Handel and reflects Brahms' intensive study of earlier masters. Blessed Are They is the sublime first movement of the German Requeim; and the original version pairs the chorus with the orchestra to create a heavy, somber mood. This skillfully crafted arrangement for flexible instrumentation, edited by Clarence Barber, makes this work playable by as few as five players up to large bands and orchestras, and everything in between.Flexible instrumentation

92718810E5EB-D1FA-43FB-9889-89ADAC306003A847590Le Cid: Pleurez! pleurez, mes yeux!Le Cid by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) is an opera in four acts with ten tableaux. It tells the the story of the historical Spanish knight Rodrigue, who led Spain’s army to victory of the Moors, earning him the name Le Cid. The tale of his rise is framed by his love for Chimène, whose father Rodrigue is forced to kill in a duel when Rodrigue's father demands revenge for an insult Chimène's father gave. While Chimène demands justice and the execution of Rodrigue for the murder of her father, Rodrigue begs for a stay to lead the fight against the moors, where is victorious. Rodrigue offers his life as punishment for the murder, but Chimène pardons him with a declaration of love. Le Cid premiered at the Paris Opéra on November 30, 1885, Ernest Altès conducting, and it was performed 150 times in Paris by 1919, when it faded from the repertory. Numerous performances around the world have taken place throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and Paris finally held a revival of the work in 2015 at the Palais Garnier. Chimène expresses her grief at her situation when she sings, Pleurez! pleurez mes yeux..., during Tableau 5, which takes place in her chamber at night. From the beginning, the composer regarded the work as a piece of fun. He wrote to his publishers Durand in Paris that he was composing a work for the coming Shrove Tuesday, and confessing that he knew he should be working on his Third Symphony, but that this work was "such fun" ("... mais c'est si amusant!"). He had apparently intended to write the work for his students at the École Niedermeyer, but it was first performed at a private concert given by the cellist Charles Lebouc on Shrove Tuesday, 9 March 1886. 927788254997-E9F4-4360-B8D4-E513EE037DCDA932790English Folk Songs Suite for Orchestra, IRV 16Ralph Vaughan Williams’ (1872-1958) ENGLISH FOLK SONGS SUITE, IRV 16, consists of three movements, the first two of which are based on the folk songs “Seventeen Come Sunday” and “My Bonny Boy”; the third adapts four songs from the Somerset region collected by Cecil Sharp. The ENGLISH FOLK SONGS SUITE quotes the Christmas carol “Dives and Lazarus”, which Vaughan Williams later published Five Variations of for harp and string orchestra. Gordon Jacob, a student of Vaughan Williams, arranged this version for orchestra. An earlier version of the ENGLISH FOLK SONG SUITES, written for military band, premiered at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, England in July 1923. 9278882A88FF-C209-4B01-AC39-CA051A61E5E310250217EspressivoEspressivo is almost Romantic in its style and sound. Written in AABAA' form, this original work in G minor is quite playable technically with only minor challenges posed by its mild chromaticism. All parts are playable in first position, but string bass and cello play the same music (at the octave). This is a beautiful, choral-like work that will provide the perfect teaching tool for sensitivity, or the perfect respite for a contemporary program.String Orchestra

Experienced bands will find this a delight to perform, as Kenneth Singleton has done a superb job in transcribing the orchestral parts into their most flattering voice in the wind band. Highly recommended!Concert Band
