By far, the most popular of the six works No. 4, NOCTURNE. It has been transcribed for various instruments, with cello arguably the most popular. Tchaikovsky orchestrated the NOCTURNE for a Châtelet performance in Paris on March 4, 1888, by the Colonne Orchestra, with Anatoly Brandukov on cello and the composer conducting. Tchaikovsky used this transcription for cello and piano by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen as the basis for his orchestration. Reprint edition of the Fitzenhagen transcription. There is only one line per part for all of the woodwinds and brass, so there is comfortable security for weaker players. It has a big, aggressive sound, so students are sure to enjoy playing this new and exciting work.Concert Band

The three songs are: 1. An sie (To Them; text by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock); 2. Muttertändelei (Mother Chatter; text by Gottfried August Bürger); 3. Die Ulme zu Hirsau (The Elm of Hirsau; text by Ludwig Uhland). Muttertändelei has become the more popular of the three, depicting a deliriously happy new mother who would not give her child away "for all the coins in the world." The ebullient and perky song makes sudden, unexpected harmonic modulations, all set to the comic text by Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794). Strauss orchestrated the accompaniment in 1911 in the original key of F. A version was later transposed to E major. Both keys are available from the publisher. 939889C75F30-72B7-441A-AA98-ED4563DA7819S685CBCoventry VariantCOVENTRY VARIANT is based on the "Coventry Carol", a 14th-century English nativity carol. From the beginning fanfare, the work celebrates the carol's message of hope and the triumph of good over evil. It is written in a continuous three-section form: I. a brief introductory "maestoso" statement with a motivic transformation of the carol in a fast tempo making use of asymmetrical meter relationships, giving a dance-like character. II. Slower and more lyrical in nature. III. A return to the material from the opening section, with alterations which lead to the final triumphal statement of the carol as one layer of multiple rhythmic strata. A return of the opening fanfare followed by a brief presto brings the work to its conclusion.Concert Band
