As he began to develop an affinity for a colder, stripped-down musical aesthetic, the original instrumentation underwent several changes before its premiere on June 13, 1923 in Paris. Dedicated to Serge Diaghilev, the work is unusually scored for four pianos, four soloists, chorus, and percussion. Its four scenes, performed without break, depict the rituals before and after a wedding ceremony, ending in an effervescent feast. Chamber `Mix Chorus (SATB)

94488A3EC9A4-4578-4D63-86E1-A19F9565E60360710007Romanian Folk Dances (Rumanische Volkstanze), Sz. 56In the years preceding World War I, Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (1881-1945) took trips to the Transylvanian region to explore the musical traditions of the Romanian population. Following a two-year depression caused by the war, as well as some professional setbacks, he returned to composition. The ROMANIAN FOLK DANCES, Sz. 56, emerged in 1915, bearing a strong influence from his experiences as an ethnomusicologist. They comprise 6 dances, all based on folk tunes that Bartók had recorded and transcribed. In 1917, he arranged a version for full orchestra. Hungarian violinist and composer Zoltán Székely (1903-2001) transcribed these six short movements for violin and piano in 1926, which are offered here in this reprint edition. Movements: 1. Joc cu bât? (Stick Dance), 2. Brâul (Sash Dance), 3. Topogó / Pê-loc (In One Spot), 4. Bucsumí tánc / Buciumeana (Dance from Bucsum), 5. Poarg? româneasc? (Romanian Polka), 6. It has all the elements players and conductors love: excitement, bold sounds, and interesting harmonies; yet, it avoids the pitfalls that so often lead to failure: rapidly changing and asymmetric rhythms, phrases too long for the students to navigate, and intricate articulations.Concert Band

94558A4DEDD3-2460-4950-86AE-9C504EA5CB55A239902Symphony No. 3 in D minorComposed by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) between 1893 and 1896, SYMPHONY NO. 3 IN D MINOR is the longest symphony in the repertoire. Performances will often include a brief intermission between the first movement and the other five. Scoring the work for large orchestra, a women’s choir, a boys’ choir, and solo alto, Mahler turned to two sources of text: Nietzsche’s "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and the collection of German folk poetry "Des Knaben Wunderhorn". The concluding Adagio, acclaimed for its expansive sublimity, was described by the Swiss critic William Ritter as "perhaps the greatest Adagio written since Beethoven". The first performance of the entire symphony took place at Krefeld on June 9, 1902, the composer conducting the Gürzenich Orchestra. Premiering many of his works, they introduced to the world such gems as Sleigh Ride, Jazz Pizzicato, and The Syncopated Clock. Composed in 1954, Alma Mater is a suite for orchestra, offering four different slices of the college experience: 1. Chapel Bells 2. Freshman on Main Street 3. Library Reading Room 4. Class Reunion.
