In 1909, after he had begun compsing and had moved to Tasmania, his brother, then lead of the Invercargill Band, wrote requesting a new march for an approaching brass band contest. Because of the urgency and immediacy of the contest, Alex responded with a piece that his publisher had just rejected, renaming it "Invercargill" and dedicated it to the citizens of that city as a memento of the years he had spent there as a boy. It was an immediate success and eventually became his most popular work. | Concert Band

Considered to be one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas, the seven-movement work sets to music the three-stanza hymn "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" by Philipp Nicolai, which addresses the prescribed reading for that Sunday, the parable of the Ten Virgins, while an anonymous author supplies additional text based on the love poetry of the Song of Songs for the middle movements. This edition by Wilhelm Rust was published as part of the Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe (Bach Society Edition) collection. | Soli STB: Mixed SATB Chor: Piano

The story of a water sprite seeking to become human to find love that turns to tragedy is based on the fairy tales of Karel Jaromír Erben and Božena N?mcová, turned into a libretto by the poet Jaroslav Kvapil. In Slavic mythology, a "rusalka" is a water sprite that one would usually find in a lake or river. While the opera has been one of the most successful Czech operas, it has only recently become more popular internationally at other major opera companies. "Song of the Moon" ("M?sí?ku na nebi hlubokém") from the first act is by far the most popular excerpt from the work, often performed in a concert setting outside of the dramatic stage. In it, Rusalka sings to the Moon, asking it to tell the prince for whom she has fallen when he hunts around her lake that she loves him.
